Volunteers bring more than just their kindness to Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC). Personal experience and creativity are huge assets to those they help. YourHub from The Denver Post recently shared the story of one of SRC’s creative volunteers, Bruce Yaple, who developed a croquet club for participants in our Adult Day Center.
While it’s always great to find ways to get people moving, the club means more than that. The weekly club also creates social connections and mental stimulation. A little competition even makes it more engaging for some. In addition to players, the weekly match draws spectators to join in the conversation around the game.
It’s had a great effect. “Over the past year, we had one client who was non-verbal,” Yaple said. “Since I started the club, he now speaks to me in complete sentences and actually seeks me out for conversation.”
